Speed Is a Ranking Factor and a Revenue Factor
Google has made page speed a direct ranking signal, and the behavior data explains why. A one-second delay in load time can cut conversions by 7% and push bounce rates up sharply. For a small business, that is not an abstract metric. It is customers who never saw your offer. Google’s Core Web Vitals, the metrics that measure loading, interactivity, and visual stability, are among the most important technical factors in where your site ranks.
Understanding Core Web Vitals
Core Web Vitals come down to three metrics. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how fast the main content loads; aim for under 2.5 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures how quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks; aim for under 200 milliseconds. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures how much the layout jumps around while loading; keep it below 0.1. Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool shows your scores and flags what is dragging them down.
Common Speed Problems and How to Fix Them
The most common culprits behind slow websites are unoptimized images, too many third-party scripts, and poorly configured hosting. Large, uncompressed images are often the single biggest drag on load times. Converting them to WebP and lazy loading anything below the fold (so images only load when they are about to enter the viewport) can transform performance on its own. Cutting third-party scripts, using a content delivery network (CDN), and enabling browser caching can easily cut load times in half when combined.
The Mobile Speed Imperative
More than 60% of web traffic is mobile, and mobile visitors are the least patient. Google indexes the mobile version of your site first, so a slow phone experience drags down your rankings everywhere. A fast, responsive mobile site is the baseline expectation now, not a bonus. Test yours with Google’s PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix and fix whatever they flag first.
Not Sure How Fast Your Site Is?
Speed problems are usually invisible until you measure them. We run performance audits that show exactly what is slowing your site down and what it is costing you. Request a free website audit and you will get a plain-English breakdown of what to fix first.
